Thought for the week.

One of the most important things we adults can do for young children is to model the kind of person we would like them to be.

CDCYour children may have heard about the Zika virus disease (Zika) outbreak and may have questions about it. Children can better cope with any disease outbreak when they know more about what is happening and that they can do something to help protect themselves, family, and friends.

Summer Feeding ProgramThis year, Cumberland County Schools Child Nutrition Services will sponsor our annual Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) beginning June 13 and running through July 29.  The seven week program will provide free lunch for children ages 18 or younger and disabled children over age 18 who participate in the school program that are also eligible.  The Child Nutrition Program provides lunches at several local agencies and organizations. Some sites that participate in the program are:  Fayetteville Cumberland Parks and Recreation Department, Salvation Army, Grove View Housing and many churches throughout the county.  Last year’s SFSP operated an average of 70 sites which included several schools with Reading Camps for First, Second and Third Graders.  This summer, the SFSP will employee 64 employees and feed over 37,000 estimated meals.

Our Super Summer Meal Program (SSMP) is a federal program that resulted from an increased awareness of the critical importance of proper nutrition for children and a belief that a summer vacation from school should not end the availability of nutritious meals. Cumberland County Schools Child Nutrition Services strongly believes in the SSMP because it helps feed the Community’s Future – the youth of Cumberland County.

All children are served the same meals without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion or disability. –   “This institution is an equal opportunity provider.”
